the light of the world

The Light of the world

14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Matt 5:14-16

The great commission calls us to ministry. This is the ministry of the Word. To a demoniacal world bound to fleshly desires, a  world which is filled with darkness, we are to be the lights of the world. By the Holy Spirit we are to offer spiritual restoration through the Gospel of Christ.

However to often we see this spiritual ministry abandon by church leaders.  Out of the desire to be the Gods moral authority and gain temporal power on earth they leave the love of Christ for political and social power and worldly gain.

Time and again we see in history Christ being used as a way for men to gain control of the masses. As a result the foot print the Church  has left on  world history is horrifying.

I challenge you now to consider what you know and have seen of Jesus Christ and his teachings.  Imagine the great city of Alexandria less than 400 years after the ascension of Christ. A  city that values knowledge, education. philosophy and enlightenment above everything. The place where the Bible was translated into  Greek for the first time.  Now imagine Christians running through the streets, pulling a woman from her chariot, stripping her naked and dragging her through the city back to the church where they filet her with pieces of tile and sharp stones until she is dead. They then cut her body to pieces and burn them outside the city walls.

The woman’s name is Hypatia.

The church leader at the time was Cyril.

I offer this for your discernment.

Now imagine if people you knew, who you went to church with committed these same acts. That the woman had been killed in your place of worship. The horror this idea brings to your mind is the same horror experienced by Alexandrians in 370AD.

Personal journals that survived from this period attest to this.

The organization of the churches was never to gain sociological and political influence. The purpose was to have places that safe guarded the teachings of Christ, that continued spreading the Gospel message and to worship and fellowship with each other. The gifts of the spirit are given for this very purpose.

Even now we see church leaders driven to fill pews organizing social and political actions against would be threats to Christendom.

Does any of these sound familiar?

Abortion, home schooling, school prayer, gay marriage are a few that come to mind. leaders quote scripture in order to condemn the actions of groups and politicians that support them. In doing this quite often they have parted from the spirit of God and the message of Christ.

Lets use gay marriage as an example.

We have two completely different issues here.

One issue is the  marriage ceremony as preformed by the church. This is a sacrament of the church. This is marriage in the eyes of God.

The second issue is the marriage contract. This is the document that legally binds you to another. This is marriage in the eyes of the law.

Our constitution is very clear with regards to the separation of church and state. If the government allows gay marriage it makes no difference to the sacrament of the church. However if the government passes a law which states that all churches must perform gay marriage ceremonies then there is an issue.

Thanks to our Constitution this will never happen. The government can never determine what is sacred. So why then is gay marriage a christian issue or a church issue?

Gay marriage has nothing to do with what Christ did for us. It is a witch hunt like Hypatia.

Most people have read John 3:16. Have you ever read what follows?

16“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21“But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” JOHN 3:16-21

We are called to the ministry of the Word. To share the gospel of Christ. To be light in a world of darkness. We are not called to establish a government that binds people to Gods law. Nor are we called to be sheriffs and enforce Gods laws in society. Nor our we called by God to seats of judgement over society.

We are called to the ministry of the Word. Through the spiritual renewal we receive from the Holy Spirit we are empowered to share the love of Christ with others.

It is easy to use Gods word to condemn others.

Who is without sin?

Hypatia is  a horrifying  example of what happens when Gods Word is ministered in a wrong way. But how can we as Christians know the right way?

First we are to love everyone unconditionally as Christ did. Telling a sinner he is sinful is like telling a terminally ill man in  a hospital bed that he is going to die. We are not to announce death but bring the message of life. Christ did not come saying you are dead he came saying you are forgiven. His message was one of hope not condemnation.

Second we must believe in Gods plan for salvation. We bring the non-believer to Christ and Christ through the Holy Spirit will do the rest. What man can save himself or justify himself in the eyes of God? The only salvation is Christ. Quit trying to eliminate sin. Instead share the Gospel of salvation.

Third… always remember- no matter who tries to move you… or compel you… or co-worse you to act… no matter what their education… or what knowledge they claim… or credentials they claim- or how others in church or society received them-that you alone are accountable to God.

You alone are accountable for your own soul.

When you stand before God, you can not say, “well the elders of my church said” or “my Paster told me to do thus and so” or “that  everyone else was doing it” or “that was how I was raised.” You will not be able to say, “well Lord virtue was not convenient at the time.”

32“Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33“But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.  34“Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35“For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law 36 and a man’s enemies will be members of his own household.  37“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38“And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39“He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it. MATT10:32-39

Do not be afraid to stand on the side of what is right even if you are the only one on that side. Even if it means you loose family or friends. Be Berean. Seek the truth of Christ in all things.

Remember -You are the Light of the World

May the Love of Christ be with you always….

…Live long and Prosper
